Card processing
Payments run through Square's own processing; rates fall on higher plans. Online: 3.3% + 30¢ (Free) vs 2.9% + 30¢ (Plus/Premium). In-person: 2.6% + 15¢ (Free), 2.5% + 15¢ (Plus), 2.4% + 15¢ (Premium). Card-on-file and manually keyed payments are 3.5% + 15¢ on every plan, which is what no-show and cancellation-fee charges would typically fall under. Businesses processing over $250,000 a year can ask Square about custom rates. Top-level rates shown are the Free plan's.
Text reminders
Automatic text and email appointment reminders are listed as included on the Free plan. Separate text marketing is Plus/Premium only: Plus includes 500 texts then 3¢ each; Premium includes 2,500 texts then 1.5¢ each.
Deposits and no-shows
Pricing page lists prepayment and partial deposits on all plans, but Square's help article says prepayment policies, card-on-file holds and cancellation/no-show fees are for Plus and Premium subscribers. No-show and cancellation fees (charged to the card on file) are clearly Plus/Premium only.
Marketplace commission
None found on the vendor's pages.
The catches
- No-show and cancellation fees require Plus ($49/mo per location) or higher
- Card-on-file and keyed charges cost 3.5% + 15¢, more than tap/dip/swipe
- Free plan's online rate (3.3% + 30¢) is higher than Plus/Premium (2.9% + 30¢)
- Pricing is per location, so multi-location businesses pay the subscription for each
- You must use Square as your payment processor
- Gift card load fee of 2.5% on Free and Plus, 0% on Premium
- Official sources disagree on whether deposits/prepayment are available on the Free plan
What I couldn't confirm
Plan prices and processing rates read from the official pricing and fees pages (via r.jina.ai reader because the pricing page renders dynamically). No annual-billing price was shown, so annual fields are null. One early fetch mentioned a 'Square Pro' custom-pricing tier but a second read of the same page did not show it; it is captured only as the $250k+ custom-pricing note, not as a separate plan. SMS reminder limits on the Free plan (whether texts are unlimited) are not stated on the official pages. No marketplace/new-client fee found on official pages.
